Born in London with heritage from Ghana and Nigeria, we are loving everything about Rakaya’s work as a poet, performance poet and Winner of the Roundhouse Poetry Slam 2018. Slam dunk, Rakaya!

Rakaya’s voice is powerful, relatable and clear with a rhythm that performance poets can get spot on. Whether speaking about serious topics of identities, faith and culture or sounding upbeat and friendly where we can almost hear her wide smile in her voice, Rakaya can mesmerise an audience with her voice as well as her words.

More about our Ace Talent:

Taking inspiration from black feminist writers and Islamic Sufi poets, Rakaya’s work sparks conversation and depicts women of the global majority through an ethereal lens. As well as performing at international arts festivals, Rakaya has shared poetry across the UK. Some of her poems have featured in Letters for the Earth (Harper Collins, 2019) and SLAM: You’re Gonna Wanna Hear This (Macmillan, 2020) and she has recorded poetry for collaborative projects with companies such as Apple, Brandnation and C40 Cities.

She is currently developing a monodrama called ‘Unbraided’ to perform at the Roundhouse about girlhood, identity and learning to canerow hair and not only that but she’s also learning Spanish and Arabic.

An advocate for self-expression, Rakaya hosts open mic nights in North West London and works with the Poetry Society to support other young writers nurture their talent.

You’re such an inspiration, Rakaya!
